The Grand Theater
Garrard County, Kentucky
MSE is the consulting engineer for the restoration of the Grand Theater. The Grand, constructed in 1926, was once the center of the social scene in Garrard County. Standing in one of the special boxes near the front of the state, one’s thoughts immediately go to the Ford Theater and President Lincoln in 1865. The Grand was the first air conditioned building in this central Kentucky farming community and brought welcome relief in the summer to its many patrons.
Sewer Projects
Carrollton CARED Regional Sewer Project
Garrard County, Kentucky
The Carrollton Area Regional Economic Development project allowed wastewater collections facility upgrades and expansion to serve existing and future commercial and industrial needs. The project included approximately 13,358 LF of 8” PVC and 1,192 LF of 10” PVC gravity sewers. Companies benefiting from this project include: Gallatin Steel, Celotex, Dow Corning, North American Stainless and the Kentucky Speedway. This project had to advertise for construction bids within 120 days from Notice to Proceed for engineering design services.
Carrollton Regional WWTP
Carrollton, Kentucky
MSE was responsible for the planning and design of a new regional wastewater treatment facility with average daily flow of 1.7 MG and peak flow of 3.4 MG, as well as major revisions of the sewage transportation system. MSE also assisted with the completion of the 201 facilities plan. This project is currently under construction. When complete the new facilities will accept and treat wastewater from four counties, seven cities and the new Kentucky Speedway. Included in the flows are the major industrial facilities along the Ohio River. Revisions to the transportation system include reversal of flow in two major force mains, upgrade at 4 major pump stations including flood proofing capacity increases, flow matching by variable speed pumping and upsizing existing force mains by pipe bursting and/or directional drilling.
LFUCG UK Trunk A Sewers
Lexington, Kentucky
The project consisted of the design of approximately 1,324 feet of 42” PVC, 432 feet of 42” DI, and 930 feet of 8” PVC sewer line and 375 feet of 36” existing sewer pipe lined by CIPP process. The project construction area was located in downtown Lexington. The project provides sewer service for much of downtown Lexington including the UK Campus and Rupp Arena. The 42” sewer is one of Lexington’s main trunk sewer lines.
Stanford WWTP Expansion
Stanford, Kentucky
The City of Stanford proposes to increase its sewage treatment capacity from 800,000 GPD to 1.2 MGD. This project will provide for a sludge filter press that would allow for sludge to be disposed in a landfill and eliminate the need for expensive private disposal and additional land for spreading of sludge. The construction of a 5.5 MGD Equalization Basin (earthberm lagoon) to handle excess infiltration/inflows as mandated by the Kentucky Division of Water will also be included in this project.
Dams & Lake Projects
Cedar Creek Lake
Lincoln County, Kentucky
The project consisted of a feasibility study and the planning and design of a 700-acre lake in Lincoln County. The dam is approximately 2000’ feet long and 90’ high of earthen construction. The dam also is used to carry a 4-lane highway, US 150, across Cedar Creek. Principal spillway consists of an 84” RCCP which drains a 22 mile watershed. The dam is designed as a Class “C” structure. This project is currently in the land acquisition stage. Project is being performed for the Kentucky Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Kentucky River Lock & Dam #7
Dam Failure Study
Jessamine County, Kentucky
MSE reviewed the stability studies previously performed on the dam in a proposed condition with the existing power plant abandoned. MSE reviewed historical data on the dam and the hydropower plant, including the design drawings, the construction records and photographs. MSE conducted field inspections on the existing structure with the assistance of a diving team. MSE made estimates for the 100-year flood elevation at the project site. MSE reviewed and provided comments and recommendations on the stability analysis that was performed by another engineering firm for the hydropower plant abandonment plan.
Stanford Harris Lake
Stanford, Kentucky
Planning, design and construction management for a 640’ long and 72’ high earthen dam and a 38-acre reservoir for water supply for the City of Stanford. Spillways include a SCS type inlet with a 36” RCCP and 50’ wide emergency spillway. Also included were 2 Miles of 12″ waterline and a 1,000 gpm pump station to allow the James Harris Lake principal spillway outlet structure to be used as a water supply intake by the City of Stanford.
Wood Creek Lake Dam Repair
Laurel County, Kentucky
Preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic studies including DAM2 and DAMBRK analysis. Design of dam repairs including raising the top using steel sheet piling and an earthen berm; and adding a seepage control system. The park’s design incorporates best management practices for storm drainage control and is designed to have an attractive “campus-like” setting in its sensitive environmental location 8 miles from Mammoth Cave National Park. The park is served by several miles of internal boulevards; a 1,000,000 gallon elevated water tank and 20” water main. Phase I is served by a triplex pump station (2000 gpm), 20” sewer force main and 9,000 LF of 10”-18” gravity sewers.
LCWD #2 Raw Water
Laurel County, Kentucky
The Laurel County Water District #2 (LCWD #2) proposes to expand its current water treatment plant from 1.44 MGD to 2.9 MGD. The District also proposes to construct a new raw water intake on the Laurel River Lake and approximately 44,000 LF or 16” raw water transmission line to the existing plant. The US Corps of Engineers has allocated use of 2.0 MGD from the Laurel River Reservoir for the LCWD #2.
